What is SSD?

An SSD stands for Solid State Disk and is similar to a hard drive. An SSD is a drive that does not move, whereas an HDD stores all information on a spinning disk under a read and write head.

An SSD is much faster, more reliable and energy-efficient. You can install various types of programs or files such as photos, games and documents on an SSD. When you buy a computer with an SSD, your PC will start up many times faster. The computer boots within 15 seconds.

You can combine an SSD with an HDD (traditional hard drive). This can be an external hard drive such as a USB stick or a mini storage device, but there are also computers that have both built-in. To keep your computer optimal, you can store files such as films, photos and documents on an HDD and operating systems and programs on an SSD.

What is RAM?

In a laptop or desktop computer you will always find RAM memory. RAM memory provides temporary storage of programs you have open and your operating system. This allows you to switch between programs faster. RAM always works together with the processor. The higher the RAM, the faster your computer can switch.

The way of storing is different from RAM memory than a hard drive (SSD or HDD). With an SSD or HDD you choose which files to store. With RAM memory, the computer automatically stores part of software or a game. When you shut down the computer, this information disappears and is cleared. RAM memory therefore ensures that the computer or laptop works faster and smoother.

Different types of RAM

There are 2 types of RAM. DDR3 and DDR4. The word "DDR" stands for Double Data Rate. DDR3 was introduced in 2007 and DDR4 in 2014. DDR4 (1.2V) is more energy-efficient than DDR3 (1.5V).

Additionally, DDR4 is much faster than DDR3. DDR3 specifications officially start at 800 MT/s (or million transfers per second) and end at DDR3-2133. Some overclock modules went as high as DDR3-3200 and more, but those are unofficial speeds. DDR4 now starts at 1600 MHz, with official support up to DDR4-3200 – and overclock kits can go up to DDR4-4800. The increased speed means an overall increase in bandwidth.
