What is noise cancelling?

Noise cancelling reduces disturbing ambient sounds and noise via anti-noise. This anti-noise is produced based on the sound around you, which is picked up by microphones in the headphones and earphones. The sound is then analysed and inverted, so you experience less disturbance from your surroundings.

Is there a difference in noise cancelling?

Definitely. Headphones can be divided into 3 classes: basic, mid-range and top class. Basic class minimally reduces ambient noise. Mid-range reduces most sounds (this can be seen as passive noise cancellation and is what the HK1 also has) and top class almost completely isolates you from your environment. Noise cancelling earphones reduce ambient noise less effectively than headphones.

What is passive noise cancelling?

Passive noise cancelling means the earphones seal your ear well, so as little outside sound as possible can enter. The better the earphones seal due to the flexibility of the material, the less ambient noise you hear.

Passive noise cancelling often works very well. Earphones that are too hard can sometimes cause a pressing feeling, but too soft earphones may fall out more easily. When buying new wireless earphones, pay attention to the type of ear tips included. Are different sizes supplied so you can use the best fit for your ears? It is also important how hard the ear tips are. They should not press inside your ear canal.
